SHOVE MONDAY AND EASTER IN MESTA

 

The traditional architecture of Chios differs from that of the other eastern Aegean islands. In Mesta village on Shrove Monday evening, an old custom is revived, the "Aga's Trial", while on Easter night, "Judas" is burnt.

The Aga's trial is a festival of folklore stories that refer to a sultan that collected taxes upon judgment. The people off the village relive thin unfortunate historical event through full day theatrical representation. On Easter Judas is burned in the town square because of his actions in Christian religion. The villagers hold a big event that everyone takes part an sets off fireworks through the early hours after midnight.
