If you are visiting Mesta Chios during this period you can enjoy one of the oldest and most attractive customs in Greece relived in Mesta, Chios every year during Clean Monday celebration, which occurs forty days before Orthodox Easter. The custom of AGAS has its roots back to the times of the Turkish Empire around 1830-1840. It is a humoristic representation of a Turkish "judge" of that time, who punishes the people of Chios for minor faults or invented accusations. The person who plays AGA distributes fines to the defendants depending on their accusations. The event takes place in Mesta main square, participants are dressed up with traditional costumes and the defendants are people from the crowd randomly selected or if were told on by their friends. It is a very entertaining event on this Greek island where the visitors will live a unique experience.

It is the third year that the 18^th International Art Symposium will be hosted in Mesta Chios. During the symposium everywhere you go in Mesta you will come across various artists that paint, forge or engrave within the alleys of Mesta, the terraces or their hotel rooms. Like every year the exhibition will take place at the main square of the village and it will be open to visitors for two days from May 5, 2009 - May 7, 2009. The 12 artists that participate will be accommodated in Mesta from May 20 until June 7, 2009.The past two years Chios Island has been included in the International Exhibition "Impressions of Greece" that takes place in Athens every year.No matter where you are staying in Chios when you are visiting the island it is worth taking a ride to Mesta and admiring the exhibition.
In cooperation with Morfes Ekfrasis an artistic organization and with the help of Tomas Kindinis an excellent actor, screen writer, and musician we seting up the first theatrical work shop this year. The shop will be held for seven days in the traditional school. For these days people can take part in acting and learn how professional actors do it. 7 hours per day practice of the ancient Greek Tragedy of "Electra" by Sofoklis. At the end of the work shop (20/6/09) a presentation of their work will be held in the central square of the village of Mesta. I you like drama this is the experience you will not forget ancient tragedy in an ancient castle.

CONCERT WITH LOUDOVIKOS OF ANOGIA (MESTA CHIOS)

The objective of the convention is to promote the uniqueness of Chios island in the existing number of engraving artists in proportion to the population. The artists serve the art of engraving in the island for centuries, from the ancient times until today. The convention emphasizes the common pathway of the engraver and the mastiha cultivator, since the two express similar sensitivity and devotion to their work through time.
A qualitative artist within a qualitative surrounding.  Mesta is very proud to host the famous Cretan singer Loudovikos. It will be one of the best concerts to experience for the visitors of Mesta. We believe that the unique rhythm of Loudovikos music will perfectly harmonise with the culture of Mesta. Loudovikos rhythms are soft and relaxed, exactly like ours.

Therefore, if Greek islands and Greek artists are in your agenda for this summer, Medieval Castle Suites will accommodate your expectations. Even if you are staying in other Chios Hotels, studios you may visit the the event since these concerts are always free of charge.

JAZZ CONCERT with Dimitra Kalogeropoulou (MESTA CHIOS)

This week , the Medieval Castle Suites organizes an open jazz concert with singer Dimitra Klalogeropoulou. If you enjoy the rhythm of Jazz, you will definitely enjoy the music within the surrounding of the Mesta castle. All Greek islands are beautiful in the summer time, however the combination of Mesta square hosting various concerts including Jazz will be a unique experience. If you are in Chios island during this period make sure you don't miss out on the event.

MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL (MESTA CHIOS)

Greek islands are usaly very crowded in August and so is Chios. If you like a crowd this period is among the most occupied in Mesta. Make sure to book early for August because all hotels, apartments and accommodations are 100% during this period.  The month of August you can enjoy various events organized by the Cultural Society of Mesta and other local bodies. One of the most famous ones is the Souma Festival. Souma is the local drink of Mesta made of figs and it belongs to the ouzo family. On souma day the locals wear their traditional outfits and make souma by the old traditional way within the village for all visitors to see participate and taste.

Also during these days at the port of Mesta, board game competitions for children take place. Board game competitions and treasure hunts within the castle of Mesta are the most important events for children.
The events come to an end with the fishermen festival where there is a fishing competition in the morning and in the evening all locals and visitors gather together to make fresh fish soup"kakavia". The day ends with a big dancing festival at the port of Mesta with traditional music, souma and food.
